Biopics have been made on legendary cricketers like Kapil Dev, MS Dhoni, and Mithali Raj. Now, former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly is set to join this prestigious list. Ganguly himself has confirmed that a biopic on his life is in the works, with actor Rajkummar Rao playing the lead role. Other names that were considered for the role included Ayushmann Khurrana, Ranbir Kapoor, and Prosenjit Chatterjee.
In a media interview, Sourav Ganguly confirmed the project, stating, “As far as I know, Rajkummar Rao will be playing the lead role. However, there are some scheduling issues, so the film might take more than a year to hit the screens.”
Sourav Ganguly’s Illustrious Career
Sourav Ganguly is regarded as one of India’s most successful captains. Under his leadership, Team India became joint winners of the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy and reached the final of the 2003 Cricket World Cup. Ganguly is also the ninth-highest run scorer in ODI cricket history, amassing 11,363 runs in his career. In total, he scored 18,575 international runs, cementing his legacy as one of India’s greatest cricketers.

Rajkummar Rao has an array of intriguing projects on the horizon. He is set to collaborate once again with Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films for Bhool Chuk Maaf, a unique time-loop drama set in Varanasi, alongside Wamiqa Gabbi. The teaser for the film was recently unveiled, building anticipation for its release on April 10, 2025. Directed by Karan Sharma, the film beautifully captures the charm of small-town romance. The story revolves around Ranjan, a hopeless romantic who secures a government job to win the hand of his beloved, Titli. However, just before their wedding, a series of unforeseen events take place, throwing his life into chaos.
In addition, Rajkummar is gearing up to play a gangster in his upcoming action thriller, Maalik, which is slated for a theatrical release on June 20, 2025. Expanding his horizons beyond acting, he has also ventured into film production with his wife, Patralekhaa. Their newly launched production house will debut with Toaster, a Netflix film featuring Rao alongside Sanya Malhotra, Abhishek Banerjee, Archana Puran Singh, and others.
