Sonu Nigam Pays Homage to the Late Legend in a Concert Titled ‘Haazri’
In commemoration of the illustrious Padma Vibhushan Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, his family and disciples are pleased to announce the second iteration of the esteemed Padma Vibhushan Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan Award. Scheduled over two days, January 16th and 17th, 2024, this event marks the third death anniversary of the legendary musician. The coveted award will be bestowed upon the renowned Padma Vibhushan Ustad Zakir Hussain on January 17th at Shanmukhananda Hall in Sion, Mumbai, with the presentation being conducted by Ustad ji’s wife, Amina Ghulam Mustafa Khan. Following the award ceremony, Padma Shri Sonu Nigam, a disciple of Khan Saab, will pay tribute to the late maestro in a concert titled ‘Haazri.’
The inaugural day of the event, January 16th, will feature Hindustani Classical performances at the Kashinath Ghanekar Natyagruha in Thane, including a flute recital by Rakesh Chaurasia, a sitar recital by Purbayan Chatterjee, and vocal performances by Pandit Venkatesh Kumar, adding cultural richness to the celebration.
Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, a luminary of Hindustani Classical Music, has left an indelible mark on the world of music, and this award serves as a testament to his legacy. It aims to honor individuals who, like him, have made outstanding contributions to the realm of Indian Classical Music. In its inaugural edition last year, the award was presented to the flute maestro Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia for his exceptional contributions to Indian Classical Music.
Tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain expresses, “This award holds a very special place in my heart. Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan is one of the great unsung heroes of Indian Classical Music, and I am happy that his legacy lives on through his family. I hope the tradition of the Rampur Sahaswan Gharana continues to thrive.”
Padma Vibhushan Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, a torchbearer of the Rampur Sahaswan Gharana, played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of several renowned Bollywood singers and received numerous awards. The tribute concert ‘Haazri’ by Sonu Nigam is a heartfelt homage to his Guru. Nigam shares, “It is going to be a tribute from a son to his father,” emphasizing the personal and emotional connection with his mentor.
Rabbani Mustafa Khan, Khan Saab’s son, expresses pride in presenting the award to Zakir Bhai this year. The event organizers, NR Talent and Event Management, aim to expand the celebration to include more cities in the coming years, steadfastly championing Hindustani Classical Music.
Renowned artists like Rakesh Chaurasia, Purbayan Chatterjee, and Pandit Venkatesh Kumar eagerly anticipate the musical tribute. Chatterjee mentions selecting an evening ‘raaga’ spontaneously, inspired by Ustad ji’s recordings, while Pandit Venkatesh Kumar looks forward to fostering Hindustani Classical Music in the contemporary era through this tribute.
